A Sudden Shock

Can you imagine waking up to find your son in a coma? That’s exactly what happened to Neville Alberts, the Regional Bodyshop Manager for Abu Dhabi Motors.

Abu Dhabi, November 2017. Whilst going into their son’s room one early morning, Neville’s wife found their 20-year old son Tristan unconscious, shallow breathing with secretions coming from his mouth. Tristan was immediately rushed to the hospital. Since that day, the life of Neville, his wife and their beloved son has been turned upside down and was never the same again.

After a 106-day coma, Tristan is now in a persistent semi-vegetative state. This is a condition in which a person is completely unresponsive to psychological and physical stimuli. Constantly in bed, Tristan cannot see, walk, talk, eat or even go to the toilet on his own. In need of constant attention and medication, he is currently hospitalised at the ProVita International Medical Center, in Abu Dhabi.

Lewis Hamilton’s T-shirt for Auction

For almost two years, Alexander Bell has been watching his friend, Neville Alberts, a strong confident automotive professional dealing with customers concerns with aplomb. He’s never shirked his responsibilities or let his performance at work falter whilst the future wellbeing of his son lay heavily on his mind. Willing to help a friend, a thought occurred to the General Manager of Al Mazroui Trading & General Services - Paints Division. He contacted Spies Hecker, one of the global refinish coating brands from Axalta. Since it is a sponsor of the Mercedes - AMG Petronas Formula 1 team, he asked the brand if it could obtain a T-shirt signed by the world champion, Lewis Hamilton. Joachim Hinz, Spies Hecker Brand Manager EMEA and Daniel Naef, Managing Director - Head of Global Motorsports Axalta Coating Systems GmbH, championed the cause and were eager to help. Thanks to them, Mercedes - AMG Petronas Formula 1 team donated a T-shirt not only signed but worn by Lewis Hamilton.

With the help of the Al Mazroui Group, Alexander Bell and Neville Alberts hope to auction the framed T-shirt at the next Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to support the hospitalisation costs which are spiralling out of control.
