Dim to Save

Installing a dimmer is one of the easiest green home improvements: every device automatically saves 4-9% in electricity over a standard on-off switch. Lutron’s dimmers and sensors create inviting, comfortable living spaces while reducing energy costs. They can be installed in a single space or a whole home to provide just the right amount of light, reducing electricity usage and extending light bulb life. For instance, incandescent and halogen bulbs last up to 20 times longer when used with a dimmer, whereas LED bulbs run cooler when dimmed which can also extend bulb life. On average, dimming an incandescent or halogen light will reduce energy use by about 20%.

Control to Save

Lutron’s Whole-Home light control systems extend energy saving to an entire house or apartment. The American brand’s advanced technology provides the tools to control the latest energy-efficient light sources, such as LEDs and fluorescent lamps. Controlling the light and blind levels in a single room or throughout a home is made easy by using a hand-held remote, wall-mounted keypad or tabletop control. And now it is also possible to use an iPad, iPhone or Android device. Included in whole-home systems, wireless controls make it simple to dim the lights to create ambiance and save energy. Moreover, discreet occupancy/vacancy sensors can be installed to ensure lights are automatically turned off when rooms are unoccupied.

Alexander Bell, affectionately known as ‘Alex’ by his colleagues and clients whom he liked to call habibi, arrived in Dubai in 1990. Despite his family’s concern as the Gulf war had just started, he decided to leave his native Britain and embark on a new journey to the Middle East. His then boss offered to keep his job until the end of the year in case the adventure wouldn’t work out. Little did he know that Alex would end up staying 30 years in the United Arab Emirates.

How did you come to the UAE?

Whilst working in Frinton-on-Sea, England, I applied for a Service Manager position in Dubai with Galadari Automobiles. The truth being told, I had no idea where Dubai was but later fondly referred to the UAE as the best kept secret in the Middle East.

What are the main differences between the UAE in 1990 and now?
In 1990, the UAE was simpler. Mobile telephones were the size of a paving block and the GPS system used was building landmarks. The transformation in such a short period of time is simply astonishing and has caused even an old-timer like me to get lost just as a newcomer would.

Later on, how did you join the Al Mazroui Group?

Back in 2000, I was headhunted by Mr Dilip Banerjee, the CFO of the Al Mazroui Group at the time, for the position of Sales and Marketing Manager. We met for a coffee and, as they say, the rest is history. I joined the Group on the 1^st of December 2000 and a short time later, I was promoted to General Manager of Al Mazroui Trading and General Services (MTGS) – Paints Division.

What will be your best memories of working for MTGS – Paints Division?

I had the opportunity to collaborate in several prestigious projects. Paints Division formulated the colour for a brand-new Maybach. I met with an Abu Dhabi sheikh to create the new car colour of the local police. Our division also collaborated in various art projects such as: the golden painted horses at Jumeirah Al Qasr Hotel, the golden painted camels at The One&Only Royal Mirage Hotel in Dubai and the amazing mural art in Port Zayed. In 2019, we even supplied the products to repaint the Pope’s vehicle for his UAE visit. But my best memories are kept for the daily dialogue and banter with my valued customers. 

How is Paints Division different from its competitors?

The first bodyshop in the UAE to have water-based automotive refinishing products was supplied by us. Loyal to our chairman’s ideal, Mr Rashed Al Mazroui, the service provided is simple: we listen to our customers’ needs and live up to our promises. Our team has an excellent rapport with the local bodyshops, many of whom consider us a vital part of their operations. To keep our customers a step or two ahead of the competition, we are always looking for cost-effective products, whilst promoting world-leading brands such as: Spies Hecker, 3M, Henkel, Spanesi, and P1 Coatings to name but a few.

What are you plans for the future?

Of course, Herend UAE has brought its own touch. For example, the classic black façade has been embellished with golden fish scales, a Herend iconic pattern.

The selection of items found in store has also been adapted to the Middle Eastern market. Next to European coffee and tea sets, dinnerware and vases, customers will be happy to find the traditional Arabic finjan revamped with Herend's iconic patterns.

Thanks to the competence of its people Al Mazroui Trading & General Services – Paints Division (MTGS Paints Division) provides optimal system solutions to its car refinish partners which make their work easier, boost their efficiency and thus generates sustainable added value. MTGS Paints Division has never stopped operating and supporting its customers since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak. However, the company had to adapt to the new rules and regulations. Rotations, shifts, working from home: MTGS Paints Division is being creative when it comes to protecting its staff while maintaining its activity up and running.

In Abu Dhabi, where the restrictions stay stricter, only 35% of the employees are working on the premises. A staff rotation has been implemented allowing the workers to alternate. Europe 4 Kilometres Away from Dubai

The World Islands is an artificial archipelago of small islands constructed in the shape of a world map, located in the waters of the Gulf, 4 kilometres off the coast of Dubai. I-ONE  Interiors was awarded with different contracts in The Heart of Europe, in association with its own joinery company Mazcot Carpentry & Décor. The project is one of the most iconic in Dubai's luxury hospitality sector, with a worth total value of $5 billion. The two Al Mazroui companies had the opportunity to work with the main contractor on the joinery package, in a challenging maritime environment.

Floating Seahorse: The Ultimate Underwater Experience

 I-ONE Interiors was assigned to take care of the interior fit-out of 130 floating Sea Horse villas. These properties are a feat of innovation, marrying imagination and engineering. The breathtakingly unique homes are ideally located to enjoy the best of The Heart of Europe. Extending over 4,000 square feet across three levels, each villa has special features, state-of-the-art technology and outdoor climate-controlled areas. But the crowning glory of this project is undoubtedly the underwater level and its wide views onto beautiful and lively coral reefs. A world first, the Floating Seahorse Villas are an authentic luxury underwater living experience.

Germany Island: Lagoon Living

Secluded, horseshoe-shaped Germany Island will offer 32 magnificent four-bedroom and five-bedroom beach and lagoon villas. I-ONE took care of the joinery works for these luxury homes. Seventeen of them will face onto a gorgeous azure-blue lagoon with a stunning seascape of coral reefs. They are amongst The Heart of Europe’s most prestigious properties. Innovative sustainability features will be embedded in their beautiful design. Moreover, the Island’s public spaces will brim with the rich German cultural heritage.

Sweden Island: Tranquil Exclusivity

With only ten luxury waterfront beach palaces with their own exclusive private beach, Sweden Island offers the ultimate privacy and tranquility one can dream for. I-ONE was involved in the joinery works for eight of these luxury properties.

Portofino Hotel: Maritime and Family-Friendly

Last but not least, Portofino Hotel is the region’s first five-star, family-only hotel. The resort will showcase 514 aquariums, one for every marine species found in the Gulf. I-ONE was in charge of the joinery, furniture, fixture and equipment works for 750 guest rooms of the hotel.  

Stage One of the rail network has already been operational since 2016. The route spreads over 264 km and enables the transport of granulated sulphur from sources at Shah and Habshan to the processing and export point, at Ruwais. 

Established in 2018, AM Infra is involved in the maintenance of the already existing railway network and its trains. It provides products and services for the transportation sector in the UAE, in cooperation with reputable partners and principals, mainly from Europe.

The Abu Dhabi-based company  supplies different kinds of materials, such as: embedded track solutions, slab track systems, buffer stops, ballast mats and thermit welding material. Considered a reliable partner by different railway organisations in the country, AM Infra is a registered supplier of material and services with Etihad Rail - Deutsche Bahn, the operator of the existing network. 

Stage Two will extend the Emirati railway by a further 605 kilometres, from the Saudi border, in the west, to Fujairah, on the east coast. The extension of the network is expected to play a key role in the country's infrastructure, considerably reducing traffic caused by heavy duty lorries. Train transport is expected to be more cost effective and environmentally friendly than road transport. 

Voestalpine, one of AM Infra's many reputable partners, was recently awarded to supply turnouts for Packages B, C and D of Stage Two. This Austrian company is a global leader for railway infrastructure system solutions. It offers outstanding products, logistics and services for rails, turnouts, signalling and monitoring applications. 

Negotiations around the remaining packages for freight facilities and a large depot are ongoing and the awards are expected in the coming months. Another tender for track maintenance machinery should be entrusted later this year. The Al Mazroui company will bid with its Austrian principal Plasser & Theurer, a global leader in the industry. Moreover, AM Infra is already evaluating the railway specific services and support needed in the future, in terms of maintenance and spare part supply. 

Abu Dhabi Transmission and Despatch Company (TRANSCO) is responsible for the development, operations and maintenance of high-voltage power and bulk water transmission networks in Abu Dhabi and other locations in the UAE. Wholly government-owned, it is part of the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA) and a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Power Corporation (ADPower). TRANSCO provides transmission networks which connect generation companies to distribution companies, as well as other end-users.

In 2010, willing to offer its clients the best wood products, Al Mazroui Construction Technology (Mazcot) partnered with Al Fahed Décor. Founded in 1992, this Beirut-based carpentry had already established its reputation in Lebanon. Promoting French and European Luxury

France's Culture Minister Franck Riester has recently presented the insignia of 'Knight in the Order of Arts and Letters' (Ordre des Arts et des Lettres) to ten luxury artisans working in the houses of the Comité Colbert. Created in 1954 by Jean-Jacques Guerlain, the Comité Colbert brings together French luxury houses, cultural institutions and European members. Since 2006, it has been working for the distinction of craftsmen in fourteen categories, amongst them: porcelain, gastronomy, silver and bronze, haute couture and fashion. More than fifty artisans have been conferred knights of the Order, in fourteen years.

'Since 2006, the Ministry of Culture has honoured artisans, with exceptional know-how, of the Comité Colbert's member houses. This year again, I am proud to recognise new artisans, in order to salute their invaluable contribution to the promotion of French culture and heritage. This recognition also underlines their essential role in transmitting to the younger generation' declared Franck Riester.

Amongst the ten craftsmen awarded in 2020 were  three European artists from Greece (Zolotas Jewellery), the Czech Republic (Moser Glasswork) and Hungary (Herend Porcelain). Ákos Tamás, Herend designer and porcelain artist was recognised for his expertise. And this was not his first distinction. The Hungarian artist has already received several awards both in his country and overseas.

A Porcelain Expert 

Born in Szentgál in 1954, Ákos Tamás' skills for sculpture manifested in his childhood. He thus decided to study drawing at The György Thuri Secondary School in Várpalota. He then studied at  the Porcelain faculty of the Hungarian University of Design in Budapest, where he graduated in 1977. Since then, Ákos Tamás has been a designer and applied artist of the Herend Porcelain Manufactory.

Besides his traditional, classical sculptures and sets, Ákos Tamás has developed a completely new porcelain style using unique techniques with delicate, pastel-coloured porcelain layers. His translucent petal bowls, coloured inlaid vases, unique ornaments and lamps quickly became popular, mainly in Italy, Greece and Switzerland. He has created pieces in almost every porcelain genre and size, from miniature medals to surreal figurine collages and several-meter-high sculptures. Many of his works of art are held in public collections such as the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest and institutions in Germany, South Korea and Japan.

• Preventing a situation of "professional conflicts" can be done primarily by ensuring that a well-defined work plan is in place in line with the management general plan (which refers to the main objectives and long-term actions) and respecting the obligations as they are stipulated in the work contract and job description of each employee. Putting the plan into practice will be a test for the managerial ability of the team leader.

Therefore, MAPCO initiated practical training projects based on professional and personal development workshops, for students attending local high schools and vocational schools.

One of their latest initiatives was an internship for local students, in collaboration with Al Ain Al Dhafra Private School.

Through participation in personal development workshops and seminars, pupils learnt about communication, teamwork, entrepreneurship, training in fornt of the employer and civic responsibility. At practical workshops, they worked alongside professionals in their specific field of work, Engineering or any of the other disciplines related to the construction industry, such as Quantity Surveying, Computer Aided Design, Accounting and HSE Engineering. The students had even the opportunity to spend a whole day visiting one of MAPCO's hospital projects, currently under construction.

"All this helps pupils to be more ready for the labour market at the end of their studies." That's the belief of Eng. Hassan Al Qaderi, MAPCO GM, who upon the completion of the program hosted a small reception for the students, where each one was awarded a Completion Certificate to commemorate their participation in the program.
