Caring, it’s a lifestyle! A MAPCO initiative

Jun 2017 | Al Mazroui
If we talk about social responsibility of companies, we inevitably have to consider two basic theories, the libertarian and the communitarian views.

"The social responsibility of business is to increase its profits" was the belief of Milton Friedman, a prominent figure of the libertarian thesis.

But unlike Mr. Friedman's opinion, MAPCO extends its understanding of CSR and embraces the communitarian sense, striving to be a model spot where engagement takes the place of indifference and where the engine that puts things in motion is caring for community at large, not only the business actors. MAPCO promotes the idea that social responsibility is defined not only by employees, suppliers, customers or regulations, but also by the community and its good, as MAPCO is a direct beneficiary of its resources.

Therefore, MAPCO initiated practical training projects based on professional and personal development workshops, for students attending local high schools and vocational schools.

One of their latest initiatives was an internship for local students, in collaboration with Al Ain Al Dhafra Private School.

Through participation in personal development workshops and seminars, pupils learnt about communication, teamwork, entrepreneurship, training in fornt of the employer and civic responsibility. At practical workshops, they worked alongside professionals in their specific field of work, Engineering or any of the other disciplines related to the construction industry, such as Quantity Surveying, Computer Aided Design, Accounting and HSE Engineering. The students had even the opportunity to spend a whole day visiting one of MAPCO's hospital projects, currently under construction.

"All this helps pupils to be more ready for the labour market at the end of their studies." That's the belief of Eng. Hassan Al Qaderi, MAPCO GM, who upon the completion of the program hosted a small reception for the students, where each one was awarded a Completion Certificate to commemorate their participation in the program.
